From Misty to Monty...

Twenty years of sailing; seven years of living aboard a 13 metre wooden ketch, named "Misty Morn". We'd had a lot of fun and some interesting trips but our crew (aka, children) had flown the nest and the yacht was now too large for just Phil and I to handle on our own. The moment had come to swop foresails for four wheels. We had previously hired a motorhome during a holiday in Australia and loved the freedom and spontaneity of travelling. After a great deal of discussion, we took the decision to put the yacht on the market and started the search for the perfect motorhome.

For 18 months, we trawled the internet, read motorhome magazines and visited dealers. From the largest RV to the smallest VW, we looked at them all, or so it felt! Eventually, we narrowed it down. We wanted an overcab, two long bench seats and a rear kitchen. We decided that 6 metres was the optimum length - large enough for comfort, small enough for easy parking.

In September 2009, we found a buyer for our yacht and off we went to search in earnest. Yet again, we called in at Martin's of Exeter, the difference being that this time we were in a position to buy, not just look. And there it was, our perfect 'van. A Ford Herald Squire 400E with an overcab, bench seats which pull together to make a double bed, and a rear kitchen. At 6 metres long, it ticked all our boxes and better still, it was in our price range! After some negotiation, a deal was struck, the newly christened 'Monty' became ours...

And the big adventure started...
